Director of Technology

This position provides technological support to all employees of the district while overseeing the overall network infrastructure plan and implementation, including network administration and maintenance. This position oversees staff development needs of technology while also keeping apprised of new developments and resources in the technology field and their application in the support of student learning. 

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate expertise in current technology infrastructure and applications appropriate to an educational environment.

  • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Must demonstrate a high level of organizational ability

  • Must demonstrate strong leadership and project management skills.

Requirements

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provides overall technical support and establishes and maintains an effective system of electronic communications throughout the district. 

  • Assists in the implementation of new software programs. Oversees the purchase, installation, and management of all technology hardware and software. Provides preventative maintenance, service and service contracts on designated software. Defines replacement cycle, end of life strategy, inventory records, and maintenance and operation records. 

  • Demonstrates cognitive abilities needed for serving employees and the general public in an office environment such as attention, language, motor skills, memory, auditory/visual processing, and ability to invoke executive function skills such as anticipation, problem solving, decision making, judgment, organization, emotional regulation, and logic and reasoning.

  • Ability to travel to and from work independently, as well as travel to off site workplace events, as needed. 

  • Ability to work regularly all assigned hours, subject to lawful leave rights and responsibilities.

  • Defines, architects, and executes the technology strategic planning for operational technology projects both in terms of infrastructure requirements and end user functionality

  • Supervises all areas of technology including software platforms, hardware, systems administration, mobile and wireless, security, customer support services, telephone, and network infrastructure

  • Collaborates with the Administrators and Supervisors in all divisions of Southern Lehigh School District to integrate technology effectively into the instructional programs and support departments

  • Supports effective online and blended learning options for students with a variety of special learning and accessibility needs

  • Provides overall support and management of the Technology Services Department

  • Develops, implements, and monitors the Technology Department budgets, for the effective operation of all technology programs and services

  • Assists in development of financial planning strategies to support the technology strategic planning, including but not limited to managing the E-rate process

  • Supervises all technology purchases and, when necessary, develops bid or RFP specifications for the purchase process

  • Provides leadership in the development and enforcement of technology policies and procedures, ensuring that they reflect current laws and technology practices

  • Provides leadership in the communication of technology initiatives with administration, staff, parents, students, school board, and community

  • Develops, executes, and manages internal network controls; emergency and backup procedures; software licensing; updates and upgrades; and disaster recovery.

  • Coordinates the design, purchase, installation, configuration, and maintenance of local area network hardware, software, and infrastructure including all servers, cabling, switches, routers, and related devices.

  • Manages IT projects within expected budgets and timelines.

  • Coordinates the technology help desk and related help desk technician caseloads.

  • Maintains up-to-date network maps; maintains accurate documentation for all network systems and procedures.

  • Manages and provides onsite and remote technical support; manages and provides emergency on-call technical support.

  • Evaluate on a constant basis the overall technology program of the district and make recommendations regarding technology information to the Superintendent.

  • Responsible for deployment and management of all district networking systems; monitoring of all information technology equipment and telecommunications equipment performance throughout the district.

  • Responsible for establishing standards for endpoint devices, wired and wireless networks, systems security, instructional software, and business applications. Direct the installation activities of in-house staff and external vendors.

  • Ensure overall security of software, hardware, and cloud services. Ensure adequate backup procedures and maintenance records are maintained throughout the District.

  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge with and experience working in technology and information systems management, most preferably in educational system settings. 

  • Experience supervising and leading other work groups and people.

  • Knowledge of and experience with applicable state and federal laws, and regulations pertaining to assigned responsibilities.

  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others.

  • Executive functioning skills such as the ability to properly plan, organize, analyze, manage time, establish goals and prioritize tasks, maintain accurate records, recall information, regulate emotions and demonstrate mental flexibility by adjusting thinking or approach when presented with new information or circumstances.

  • Exemplary skills in written and oral language with the ability to communicate respectfully, clearly and concisely by telephone, in person, and in written form.

  • Demonstrated literacy using a variety of technology and business office software products such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite. 

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate (read, write, speak) and comprehend the English language to effectively carry out functions, duties, and responsibilities.

  • Ability to be at work during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, and at other times as may be required by the position.)

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, lift and reach.

  • Repetitive motion of the hands including both fine and gross motor dexterity to manipulate a computer keyboard and when performing routine tasks such as filing.

  • Must be able to lift/carry a minimum of 30 lbs.

  • Ability to independently ambulate or navigate in and around school buildings and office areas.

  • Ability to travel to and from assigned work locations without employer support.

 

Work Environment: 

  • Normal school and office environments. Travel throughout the District and IU21 service area as well as occasional statewide travel as required.
