What is basic education funding?
What is basic education funding (BEF)? At about $6 billion for 2018-19, the basic education funding (BEF) line item represents about 50% of all state funding to school districts, and the revenue can be used to cover a broad spectrum of educational programs. The total amount of BEF provided each year is dependent on the amount approved in the state budget, and the chart below shows how the BEF line item has grown over time.
