ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
The PASBO Food Service Director’s Conference is designed FOR
food service professionals BY food service professionals. Don’t
miss this chance to gain tools, share ideas, save money, try new
products and renew your enthusiasm for serving the children of
Pennsylvania. The event will feature:
- Seminars and Breakout Sessions - will provide
important, relevant tools that can be used to improve your
school food service programs.
- Exhibits - over 50 food service related companies
will be at the conference on Tuesday with the newest products
for school food service. Food product, beverage, software and
equipment vendors will all be represented. Food vendors will
offer recipes designed to increase meal participation.
- Cost Savings Tools - vendors will offer coupons and
rebates, and sessions will discuss ideas to build operational
efficiency and competitiveness.
- Networking Opportunities - get to know your peers
from many school districts throughout the state while enjoying
meals, exhibits, a reception and lively discussions during the
educational sessions.
KEYNOTE SESSION
Foodservice 2010: Navigating the ‘New Normal’
Gerald White is back to help Food Service Directors to deal with
changes in the school nutrition world. His experience within many
facets of the food industry and consumer behavior expertise will
provide insight as to how to prepare for what’s coming next. Mr.
White, former editor of Food Management magazine, recently formed
The Jerry White Company, a business development consultancy
specializing in connecting foodservice communities. His informative
and stimulating presentation at the 2008 PASBO Food Service
Director’s Conference paved the way for him to be invited back as
the 2010 keynote speaker.
GENERAL SESSION TOPICS
- Innovations and Trends with Nutrition on Campus - Lisa Wandel,
Director of Residential Dining for Penn State University, will
share success stories from Penn State’s dining commons that can be
applied to K-12 food service.
- Creating State Regulations: How Food Service Directors Can
Influence the End Result - Sarah Miller, from the Independent
Regulatory Review Commission, will present the background behind
the regulatory process and explain how to add a dose of realism
into the process. This topic is particularly relevant as the PA
Nutrition Guidelines are under development.
- PDE Update - Vonda Fekete, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., Chief of PDE’s
Division of Food and Nutrition will provide information about PDE
initiatives and answer questions about requirements and
regulations.
- PDA Update - Geoff Dunaway and Nancy Derr from the PA
Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Distribution, will be
on hand to share any news from their departments and to answer
your questions.
BREAKOUT SESSION TOPICS
- Sustainability: Making it Work for School Nutrition - Jerry
White, our keynote speaker, will cover this important topic in
more detail, providing examples of successful programs and
products.
- Creative Staffing Solutions - Barb Nissel from Great Valley
School District and Jack Koser from Lower Merion School District
will moderate this discussion concerning how to get the most from
the staff you’ve got.
- Staying Competitive in a Self-Op program - David Preston, Food
and Nutrition Services Supervisor from Tredyffrin-Easttown SD, was
a former management company employee and will share the “secrets”
that food service directors need to know to keep their operations
intact and profitable.
- Hot topics - Greg Hummel, Director of Food Service for Derry
Township SD, will discuss important school nutrition issues that
are making the news and influencing K-12 food service programs.
- Farm to School/Buy Fresh-Buy Local: - Representatives from the
PA Department of Agriculture will be on hand to explain these
programs and help food service directors find ways to incorporate
these products into their daily menus.
- Key Performance Issues - Beth Mincemoyer Egan, PSU School of
Hospitality Management
